Get a driver's licence

Eligibility

New drivers must complete the Graduated Driver Licensing Program to get a Yukon driver's licence. You must:

• be at least 15 years of age;
• provide valid identification;
• pass a written test; and
• pass a vision test.

Complete learner and novice stages

You have to complete both the learner, novice stages of the Graduated Driver Licensing Program to get your full licence.

Take the written test

1. Study the Yukon Driver’s Basic Handbook to prepare for the written test.
2. Come to a Motor Vehicles office to take your test. The test fee is $20. If you fail the test, you can take it again as early as the following day. You'll need to pay $20 for a new test.
3. Bring valid identification and proof you're a Yukon resident.
4. If you are under 18 you need to bring a parent or legal guardian. They'll also have to show proof of identity.

Take the vision test

You'll be required to have a vision test as part of the process to get your driver’s licence. If you do not pass the vision test, you'll need further vision testing by an optometrist or ophthalmologist.

If you need to wear glasses or contact lenses when you drive, this restriction will be shown on your licence.

Get your learner's licence

You'll get a learner’s licence and package once you have passed the written and vision tests. Study the Tuning Up for Drivers Handbook to prepare for your road test.

Follow the learner stage restrictions

In the learner stage there are restrictions you must follow:

• There's zero tolerance for alcohol or drug use for both you and your co-driver.
• Your co-driver must hold a valid minimum class 5 licence for at least 2 years and must accompany you when you're driving at all times.
• You can only operate a motor vehicle between 5 a.m. and midnight.
• You need to log at least 50 hours of driving practice with a valid co-driver.
• You must display a learner driver "L" sign on the back of your vehicle every time you drive, visible to drivers of vehicles approaching from behind.
• You are limited to 2 passengers including your co-driver. You can have more passengers if they are immediate family members. This includes parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters or your children.
• Everyone must wear a seat belt.
• You can only operate a car or light truck whose registered gross vehicle weight does not exceed 4,000 kilograms and seating capacity is not more than 7, including the driver.
• You can not use any hand-held or hands-free electronic devices while driving.
• You are not allowed to tow a trailer.
• You'll be in the learner stage for a minimum of 6 months.

Get varied driving experience

We recommend you gain experience driving in a variety of traffic and weather conditions, including winter and night time driving.

Take your road test

To be able to take your road test you must:

• be at least 16 years old;
• have had your learner’s licence for 6 months; and
• have accumulated 50 hours of driving time.

Book a road test

• Contact your nearest Motor Vehicles office to book a road test appointment.
• A road test costs $20.
• You must provide a safe vehicle with valid insurance and registration.
   

The test covers:

• using intersections (driving through, turning right, turning left);
• backing up;
• entering traffic;
• pulling over and stopping on the side of the road;
• changing lanes;
• parking on a hill;
• starting on a hill;
• angle parking;
• parallel parking;
• stall parking (driving forward and backing up);
• 2 and 3 point turns;
• merging on and off a highway; and
• general driving (such as driving straight, driving on hills and curves).
   

Once you pass the road test, you'll be issued a novice licence.
 

Follow the novice stage restrictions and conditions

In the novice stage, there are restrictions you must follow:

• A co-driver must accompany you between the hours of midnight and 5 a.m.
• There's zero tolerance for alcohol or drug use for you as well as your co-driver.
• Your co-driver must hold a valid minimum class 5 licence for at least 2 years.
• Co-driver restrictions may not apply to a driver who has been approved for a midnight work exemption. Contact Motor Vehicles office for more information.
• You can only operate a car or light truck whose registered gross vehicle weight does not exceed 4,000 kg and the seating capacity is not more than 9 (including the driver).
• You can not use any hand-held or hands-free electronic devices while driving.
• You are not allowed to tow a trailer.
• You'll need to be in the novice stage for at least 18 months before you're able to apply for a full class licence.

To get your full class licence

After completing the novice stage, the next step is to apply for a full licence. You can do this at any Motor Vehicles office. They'll tell you how to apply.
